Cubs Resign Ryan Dempster: 4 Years 52 Million

According to several reports, the Cubs have resigned 17 game winner Ryan Dempster to a 4 year 52 million dollar deal. Dempster had a career season, and finished 6th in the NL Cy Youn Award voting. It still appears that GH Jim Hendry will still push the San Diego Padres to acquire Jake Peavy, but that deal is up in the air. This signing could pay off, or he could under preform next year. If we works harsd this offseason, he could easily win 17 games for the Cubs again.

Cubs Acquire Closer Kevin Gregg for Jose Ceda, Who Closes?

With Kerry Wood, gone the Cubs acquire a new closer. Well, Gregg was the closer for the Florida Marlins. The Marlins receive Cubs pitching prospect Jose Ceda. Ceda was involved in the Cubs/Jake Peavy rumors. Kevin saved 29 game in 2008, but blew 9 saves, uh oh. He says that he had a bothering knee, wasn't 100%, and he had surgery to help it and should be 100% by Spring Training. Now, who will close for the Cubs in 2009? Will it be 8th inning man fireman Carlos Marmol, or Gregg with clsing experience. That is up for debate, and we'll know possibly in Spring Training. This deal could also meqan Bob Howry is gone from the Cubs bullpen and team.

Kerry Wood, after 10 seasons with the Cubs, will not return in 2009 according to GM Jim Hendry. Wood will hit the free agency market, and will not return. In 10 seasons over 11 years with the Cubs, Wood compiled a 77-61 record with a 3.65 ERA and 1,407 strikeouts in 276 games.

Cubs Stay Put At July 31st Trade Deadline

Apparently the Cubs are going to stick with their current roster until the September callups. General Manager Jim Hendry had discussions with other teams about trades, but didn't pull the trigger. The Cubs have a great roster up and down so maybe the best trade was not making one.

How Sweep It Is!!!

The Cubs just wrapped a 4 game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers,. Everybody on the Chicago Cubs' roster conteributed to the huge series. The Cubs beat the Brewers aces CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets. When the series was over, the Cubs had a 5 game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals and the Brewers. Everybody was expecting a 2-2 split in the series, but the Cubs swept one of theyr division rivals in their park. Cubs fans, be proud of your team.

Cubs Acquire Pichers Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin

The Cubs have acquired starting pitcher Rich Harden and reliever Chad Gaudin from the Oakland Athletics for starting pitcher Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton, infielder/outfielder Eric Patterson, and minor league catcher Josh Donaldson. This season, Rich Harden has a 5-1 record with a 2.34 ERA. People say when healthy and on, Rich Harden has just as good of stuff as any pithers in the league. Chad Gaudin is 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA. I'm very happy with the big trade general manager Jim Hendry has made, and will give us a bigger push towards the postseason. You can't go wrong with a starting rotation consisting of NL-ALL Stars Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster, allong with Rich Harden and Ted Lilly who are also very good.

7 Cubs Named to 2008 MLB All Star Game at Yankee Stadium

Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto and outfielders Alfonso Soriano and Kosuke Fukudome have been named starters for the All-Star game at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Third Basemen Aramis Ramirez was named a reserve and starting pitchers Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster were named to the pitching staff as well as closer Kerry Wood. Manager Lou Piniella will be an assistant over head NL Mangager of the Colorado Rockies, Clint Hurdle. The All-Star game is for homefield advantage in the World Series. Even if you think some Cubs players are undeserving, there will be 7 at Yankee Stadium on July 15th. Congratulations to everybody.

Eric Patterson: Consider Keeping The Guy

This guy is nothing like his brother who turned out to be a nightmare for the Cubs. This guy has a great attitude and gives 100%. It's the little things like when he may pop out he'll sprint around the bases or go all out down the basepath on a groundball that almost got him 2 infield hits last night. He has shown speed, and he's handling the bat, last night he hit a 2 run home run off Javier Vazquez and had 3 hits the previous day. Jim Hendry may be just using Patterson to show off his talent for showcasing, This could be a bargaining chip for general manager Jim Hendry. Other teams may see Patterson's talent and Patterson could be involved in a trade for example the Cubs acquiring a pitcher. This kid has been nothing but good, and the Cubs should consider keeping him. He's outplayed Felix Pie and Pie was touted to be a lot better. If they can acquire a top tier pitcher like a C.C. Sabathia and Eric Patterson has to be traded to make the deal work, good luck kid. Eric Patterson has more potential than you think, and he could someday be a great player. Sadly though, the Cubs may not have room for him.

Cubs Should Target A Pitcher

Zambrano is on the 15 Day DL with a minor strain in his throwing shoulder. I believe the Cubs should target a pitcher. Great teams who have success usually have great pitching, and you can never have enough pitching. Guys like Dan Haren, C.C. Sabathia, and Erik Bedard are just a few off the top of my head. I'm not concerned about Zambrano and I'm confident he'll return to the Cubs strong and healthy.

The MLB BEST CHICAGO CUBS just swept their crosstown rival the Chicago White Sox. The Northsiders have bragging rights for the next week or so. I thought the Cubs would do well in this series, but not a sweep. This is excellent to see the Cubs playing verw well against a playoff contender.

Lee Hak-ju (Korean SS) Scouting Report: Scouts have said that he has better defensive tools than Derek Jeter had in the early 1990's, Hak-ju is only 18. He has average power and make good contact but has amazing speed. He gets down the first base line in 4.10 seconds. All of his offensive tools and speed compare him to Ichiro. If the Cubs just signed somebody with combined tools of Derek Jeter and Ichiro, HOLY COW!

Former Cardinal Jim Edmonds made his debut yesterday. I would've never imagined him wearing Cubbie Blue. He recieved a standing ovation from the Friendly Confines crowd, and singled in his first at bat as a Cub. We'll see if he can fare well as a Cub unlike he did earlier this year as a San Diego Padre.

No Patience Lou?

After Cubs south paw Ritch Hill failed terribly on Friday by walking 4 batters (1 run in) so manager Lou Piniella pulled the plug on his program. Hill was demoted to AAA Iowa and Sean Gallagher, who has ekectric stuff, was called up. Hill has been having control problems since Spring Training. Since Hill was a strater, Jon Lieber now fills his role.

My take: Rich Hill needs to work on a lot of things, Lieber's been good this year, great decision by Cubs management.

What I saw: Ryan Dempster pitched spectacular for the Cubs, gving up 0 runs in 7 inning. Though he walked out of PNC Park with a no decision. The Cubs had a chance to win twice but didn't seem to get it. Wood gave up a solo home run to Jason Bay, got a blown save, failing to earn his 4th save of the year. After Aramis Ramirez hit a 2 run home run in the top of the 14th, Kevin Hart gave up a 2 rub home run to Adam LaRoche. But Fe;ix Pie had the bases loaded in the top of the 15th, he hit a 2 out, 2 run single to give the Cubs a 6-4 lead after Sean Marshall got his 1st career save after just being called up from Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs like to make things exciting.

What I saw: Ted Lilly didn't pitch fantastic once again and failed to get a win. The Cubs blew a 7-0 lead but managed to win luckily. Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano need to get out of their funks, though Ramirez had a good game. What I saw: Jason Marquis showed why he's 5th starter, 5 runs (4 earned) in 5 1/3 innings. What I saw: Rich Hill pitched a pretty good 6 innings only giving up 2 runs, but he got out of jams. Hill got no run support (got little last year). Jon Lieber got the loss which he didn't deserve do to the groundball error by Mark DeRosa and the misplay in the outfield by Alfonso Soriano. Rough start to the season. The Astros are (2-3) and the Cubs are (1-3).

What I saw: Ted Lilly gave up 3 runs in 4 2/3 innings in his 2008 debut, and it wasn't his best start as a Cub. The bullpen gave up 5 runs (4 earned) and Bob Howry had his second bad game of the year. Not much else to say, it was a terrible game for the Cubs. The Brewers are now (2-0) and the Cubs are (0-2). The Cubs are off to a bad start. No concerns though (yet).

What I saw: Carlos Zambrano went 6 2/3 scorless innings of 3 hit baseball. He left in the 7th in what appeared to be cramping in his arm which he's dealt with in the past. It was scorless until the top of the ninth. Kerry Wood came into the game to keep the game scorless. In his first pitch he hit Rickie Weeks with a pitch and he was eventually knocked in by a Ryan Braun single after the Cubs intentionally walked Prince Fielder (MIL 1-0). With Braun and Fielder on base Corey Hart hit a double, then advanced to third (MIL 3-0). The Cubs then got their shot. Derrek Lee led of the bottom of the ninth with a single off of Eric Gagne. Aramis Ramirez walked on four straight pitches. In his MLB debut, Kosuke Fukudome came up to bat previously having doubled, walked, and singled. On a 3-1 count he hit a 3 run home run and Wrigley Field went into pandemonium (Tie 3-3). Bob Howry came into the top of the tenth and gave up a leadoff double to Craig Counsell. Former Cubs Jason Kendall sacrificed Counsell over to third base on a bunt. Tony Gwynn Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to center field (MIL 4-3). The Cubs and Ryan Theriot, Alfonso Soriano, and Derrek Lee got out 1-2-3 and the Cubs lost 4-3 in 10 innings. Eric Gane got the win for the Brewers (1-0), and Bob Howry got the loss for the Cubs (0-1). A day where "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks got a statue presented to him outside of Wrigley Field was spoiled. The Cubs are (0-1) and the Brewers are (1-0).

Cubs Close To Acquiring Coco Crisp

UPDATE: Nick Cafardo of the Boston GLobe says the Red Sox aren't interested in either player and that they want bullpen help or prospects.

670 The Score radio station in Chicago is reporting the Cubs are close to acquiring outfielder Coco Crisp from the Boston Red Sox for Cubs pitcher Jason Marquis and outfielder Sam Fuld. He wanted to start in Boston or be traded so it seems like he'll start in the Cubs outfield. It wouldn't make sense to make a unhappy guy unhappier. This could mean many things. Felix Pie may be traded (possibly for Brian Roberts), won't start, or be put in the minors. It could also mean a Roberts deal is close and we may get Jay Payton along with Roberts to be a backup outfielder. Matt Murton may also be staying a Cub, or be dealt in another deal.

My take: This is bad, really bad. Coco Crisp had a terrible 2nd half of the season last year. Sam Fuld has a lot of potential and we're trading him for garbage. On the other hand, Marquis and his terrible contract is off the Cubs' hands. I thought the Cubs had a little interest, not getting a deal done.

A couple days ago Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Cubs and the Detroit Tigers have had some discussions about a trade, notebly in the Cubs bullpen. He says that Brandon Inge coulde come in return to play center field...right. If the Tigers acquire Jason Marquis or Ryan Dempster, the rotation is coming together more for the Cubs.

My take: If they can take something bad off our hands that doesn't affect a possible Roberts deal, I'd try to get something.

The Brian Roberts Trade Talks Are Becoming Serious

John Heyman of Sports Illustrated had a source tell him that the Cubs, Baltimore Orioles Brian Roberts trade talks are getting serious. He notes Jay Payton could come to the Cubs along with Roberts in one of the scenarios discussed. Jason Marquis may also be traded to the Orioles. Heyman says these Cubs players could be players that the Orioles may want to acquire back in return:

The Cubs scouted Roberts yesterday and the Orioes will scout Cubs players next week. The Cubs may have their new leadoff hitter. If Levine is correct, this deal may happen in the next few days.

My take: This is very good news, very good. It's sounding like all this nonsense is finally coming to an end. The Cubs might be getting their man, and have a real leadoff hitter so Soriano's home runs can actually be with guys on base and not the first at bat of the game.

Mark DeRosa Still In Hospital

Yesterday Mark DeRosa complained of a rapid heartbeat while fielding, doctors checked him out, Cubs called 911. He had and irregular heartbeat and had a hard time breathing. He has been in a hospital sunce yesterday and is expected to be released sometime Sunday. Teammates visited him. Mat Murton sent him a text message and got the response "I'm sorry I scared everybody. It's something that's been happening since I was a little kid" Let's all wish DeRosa is ok. And could this possibly spark Hendry to get a Robets deal done? We'll see.

Aramis Ramirez: Cockfighter?

The New York Times reported this month that aramis Ramirez was featured in an issue of a Dominican cockfighting magazine, En La Traba, and is pictured with some roosters. He was quoted "When I'm in the Dominican Republic, I'm dedicated entirely to them (the roosters)." Pedro Ramirez and Juan Marichal were videotaped at a cockfight in the Dominican Republic.

My take: I understand it's a whole different culture down there, I've even been there, but that's still sick. It's definetely not as bad as dogfighting or anything like that but I just hope Ramirez can keep a semi good image.

Cubs Sign Alex Cintron To Minor League Deal

Buster Olney of ESPN has heard Orioles GM Andy McPhail is in favor of trading Brian Roberts if he gets the right deal for him.

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun says the negotiations could drag into Spring Training to get the right deal in place and that the Orioles might keep Roberts, then trade him in July.

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports sources close to Brian Roberts say that if a deal is agreed upon Roberts would waive his no trade clause to come play for the Cubs.

It sounds like the Orioles are willing and wanting to trade him and Roberts is willing to be traded. All that appears to be needed to get the deal done are the details such as which players will head to Baltimore.

My take: This is sounding really good Cubs fans. No more question marks. It's all just who's out and Roberts is in. He's probably coming, so lets hope Jeff Zrebiec is wrong so this doesn't stretch into July.

I have heard a very valid pint of a potential holdup for the Brian Roberts deal:

The reason for the Roberts trade being on the hinges is because if the Orioles acquire Roberts they may also send newly acquired (from the Mariners) George Sherrill along with Roberts. This may be the reason why the Cubs are offering both Pie and Gallagher in the trade. It really makes a lot of sense.

My take: Cubs fans just pray that Orioles owner Peter Angelos (who knows very little about baseball) nixes the Bedard deal. If that deal happens we get Roberts and a pitcher with a very high potential. Fingers crossed.

Erik Bedard Almost On Way To Seattle, Brian Roberts To Cubs After?

There had been reports that the Seattle Mariners acquired Erik Bedard from the Baltimore Orioles. It has been said Orioles owner Peter Angelos is dealing with a family manner so the deal isn't done. Jason Churchill thinks the deal will have Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, Tony Butler, and Kameron Mickolio going to Baltimore. It looks like the O's got Bedard out of the way and Roberts is making his way to the Cubs. Adam Jones is an outfielder so Baltimore may not require the Cubs to give up Felix Pie to land Roberts. But knowing the Orioles high asking prices, we'll probably need to include Pie. Jone Heyman of Sports Illustraded says the O's might send Brian Roberts to the Cubs for Sean Gallagher and Felix Pie if they finish the Bedard deal. Still there may be a 3 way deal in discussion between the Texas Rangers, Orioles, and Cubs.

My take: I would've liked both Bedard and Roberts but we would've lost the farm system. With only Roberts the Cubs don't have to give up nearly as much. It looks like the Orioles may try very hard to get a Roberts deal done soon.

Padres Want Murton, Marquis to Baltimore?

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports is saying the San Diego Padres want Matt Murton to play left field. Padres GM Kevin Towers and Jim Hendry get along so maybe something will work out. The Cubs have interest in Marlon Byrd and would need him to lure away Byrd. The Padres on the other hand Khalil Greene's conract expires after the '09 season so if the Padres will give him up the deal has a good chance of being struck. Phil Rogers of the Chcago Trubune says that a 3 way deal with Texas and Baltimore could happen. He says the Cubs would recieve Brian Roberts, Erik Bedard, and Marlon Byrd. Now, Rosenthal thinks Jason Marquis could be shipped to Baltimore in a potential deal with a package of Roberts. This doesn't count out a Roberts/Bedard deal or the 3 way one.

My take: I would like to see the 3 way deal get done so we can have Roberts at 2B, Bedard starting, and probably Byrd starting (Pie would be traded). Then, if we don't have to give up Murton, we might get Greene. Personally I'd rather see DeRosa or Theriot as our starting SS.

A Byrd/Pie CF?

T.R. Sullivan of Mlb.com says the Cubs have talked to the Texas Rangers about acquiring outfielder Marlon Byrd. He says they are only in the early stages of trade talks. The proposed deal would have the Cubs surrendering outfielder Matt Murton. If the deal is struck Byrd could platoon with Felix Pie in center field. Byrd will become a free agent in 2009.

Cubs Sign Jon Lieber

The Cubs signed right-handed pitcher Jon Lieber to a 1 year deal worth 3.5 million dollars. Lieber, who won 20 games for the Cubs in 2001, is turning 38 in April but when he was on the Philadelphia Phillies he ruptured a tendon in his right foot causing him to miss the second half of the season. Lieber may be able to slide into the starting rotation's 4th or 5th spot. It appeared the Cubs had interest but nobody knew how serious it was.

My take: I have concerns about this signing because he's getting a little up there and he's coming back from injury. If he's in the rotation let's hope he fairs well.

Phil Rogers from the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Cubs and the Brian Roberts deal and the Mariners and the Erik Bedard trade are still in negotiations, but nothing is close. Rogers thinks the stalling with the Roberts trade is over Felix Pie and Tyler Colvin and he thinks if the Cubs are willing to part ways with either Pie or Colvin that the Cubs could strike Roberts and Bedard in the same deal.

My take: I would part with either Pie or Colvin with no hesititation if it were to get both Roberts and Bedard. I like the way Phil Rogers is thinking.

Ken Rosenthal has said that the Cubs are interested in acquiring Melky Cabrera from the New York Yankees...hmmm. According to Bruce Levine the Brian Roberts to Chicago from Baltimore deal is dead. It's unknown if this is true. A new name has surfaced: Marlon Byrd. He spent 109 games last year with the Texas Rangers and in those games he hit .307 with a .355 on base percentage. Brian Roberts Close To Coming To Cubs (The Deal Isn't A Done Deal)

Phil Rogers thinks it's going to happen. WGN's Dave Kaplan looked into al of the chaos the "great sources" of his claim the price to acquire Roberts is higher than what everybody thinks. The Orioles reportedly want Rich Hill, Felix Pie, or Tyler Colvin. Jim Hendry has already said Hill is untuchable and it doesn't look like the club wants to part with Pie just yet, but Colvin? Roberts stole 50 bases last year and hit .290.

My take: This new rumored deal sounds interesting but what would we do with Murton? I like this new deal. It sounds very good and we're getting one of the elite leadoff hitters in the game. Fingers crossed people, fingers crossed. I heard something of a Gallagher, Marshall, Colvin, and Veal deal.

Angel Pagan Traded to the Mets

Epatt or Murton aren't "wanted" though they have been rumored in the deal. Levine can see a trade happening soon so the Cubs can move on to starting pitching. Levine says a possible backup if Cedeno is traded is Alex Cintron. He also says the Cubs have shown interest in Jon Leiber as the back of rotation type guy.

My take: I like the way the Roberts deal talks are going. I'm fine with trading Cedeno (never will get a chance), Sean Gallagher and Sean Marshall. I'd rather keep Veal than Marshall. CHICAGO -- The Cubs will add 70 box seats along the third-base line at Wrigley Field, and install new advertising signage inside the ballpark in 2008.
The city of Chicago gave the team permission to make the changes on Thursday. The moves were done despite Wrigley Field's landmark status.
Peter Scales of the city's Department of Planning and Development said the changes were approved because "landmark buildings aren't frozen in time, need to be maintained and can be improved while respecting their history."
The changes were approved as Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and Chicago mayor Richard Daley consider the Tribune Co.'s request to have the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority acquire and renovate Wrigley Field.
In addition to the seats, which will be called "Bullpen Box Seats," the club will be extending digital signage on the sides of the grandstands, according to Cubs vice president Mike Lufrano.
The Cubs currently have 82 Bullpen Box Seats along the first-base line. The team determined they had space for the new seats along the third-base line after the new drainage system was installed this offseason.

East China Windup speaks of a thirdhand report indicating the Yankees' intent to acquire Darvish after the 2008 season. Apparently the Dodgers, Mets, and Cubs are on his trail as well. According to the report, Daisuke Matsuzaka's $8.6MM salary would be the floor with Darvish. Two huge questions remain. Are the Fighters actually considering posting Darvish after the '08 season? The loss of such a popular player would be a huge hit for Japanese baseball. Also, does Darvish even want to play in the U.S.?

My take: If this kid is the real deal he could get more than what the Red Sox paid for Daisuke Matsuzaka (51 million). This could be huge, and I hope something makes of it. Good thing the Cubs are interested in this young stud!

George Offman of WSCR 670 Radio reports the Cubs would at least have to give up Caros Marmol. Marmol is a young kid, who was great for us last year. I don't understand why you would trade a kid with so much potential for a 33 year old in the final year of his contract. The Twins maybe also asking for another good prospect in return. Discussions are preliminary and no decision has been reached, former Gov. James Thompson, the facilities authority's board chairman, said in a statement. The talks were first reported by the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. The sports body was created by state lawmakers in 1987 for the purpose of building a new Comiskey Park, now U.S. Cellular Field, where the Chicago White Sox play. Thompson emphasized in his statement that the cash-strapped state government "does not have any intention of using tax dollars to acquire Wrigley Field, and would not consider the transaction if it involved any state taxpayer dollars going to the Tribune Company." He said discussions have focused on whether acquiring Wrigley Field is the best means of assuring the 93-year-old ballpark "remains the long-term home of the Chicago Cubs, continues to serve as an engine for economic development in our city and state while ensuring it receives any necessary restorations." Tribune Co., which intends to sell the Chicago-based Comcast sports channel as well as the Cubs and Wrigley in the first half of 2008, declined to comment on the talks. Tribune is in the midst of trying to sell the Cubs as part of an $8.2 billion deal to take the company private under the leadership of real estate magnate Sam Zell. Today George Mitchell released his 21 month project in order to find out some current and former players who were using performance enhancing drugs. The biggest names that were on the former US senator's list were Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Andy Pettite, Miguel Tejada, Gary Sheffield, Eric Gagne and Paul Lo Duca. The Cubs have been in heated trade talks with the Orioles about their 2nd baseman Brian Roberts, his name appeared on the list. The question is will they still try to get a deal done with Baltimore? According to Gordon Whittenmyer of thehe Chicago Sun Times yhe long, winding and mostly frustrating road of Mark Prior's career as a Cub has officially come to an end with the Cubs' decision tonight to non-tender the former 18-game winner, sources said. Prior, who is rehabbing from shoulder surgery eight months ago, was eligible for arbitration - a process that would have meant a projected salary of about $3.4 million for a pitcher whose health for the season was at least in doubt. Negotiations on a possible contract that would have called for a lower salary stalled weeks ago over the Cubs' offer and their demand for a club option for 2009 - which would have bought out Prior's first year of free agency. Facing an 11 p.m. deadline for offering arbitration, and failing in an attempt to trade him for a prospect, the Cubs instead cut loose the former No. 2 overall draft pick, making Prior a free agent.

My take: We should've signed him with an option for 2009. What if somehow, someway he shapes back to the 2003 form of him? I would've given him 1 more chance but what can you do?

Tejada Dealt to Astros, Frees Up Space For Roberts Deal?

According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune we'll see if Andy MacPhail was only waiting to make a Miguel Tejada trade before going to Peter Angelos to approve one sending Brian Roberts to the Cubs. According to major league sources, the Houston Astros are about to announce that they are getting Tejada from Baltimore for a package of four players, built around pitchers Troy Patton and Matt Albers. The other players are reportedly outfielder Luke Scott and minor-league third baseman Mike Costanzo. The departure of Tejada leaves the Orioles in need of a shortstop and would make them extremely thin up the middle if they also traded Roberts. That could mean the Cubs put Ronny Cedeno, Eric Patterson or even former Orioles first-rounder Mike Fontenot in a trade for Roberts. If Sean Gallagher goes to Baltimore in a Roberts trade, that would mean Andy MacPhail has added three potential 2008 starting pitchers without trading one. Might that give the Cubs a chance to expand the Roberts negotiations to include Erik Bedard? Things are getting interesting.

My take: Roberts would be a great addition to this club, Bedard would sweeten the deal.

The 27 year-old hasn't started a big league game since August 10th, 2006. If he becomes a free agent, I imagine many teams would view him as a low-risk, high-reward option. The Padres have cooled on him though. The Cubs have until tonight to offer Prior arbritration. The Chicago Sun Times says there is a 50/50 chance of that happening and the Tribune not very likely. According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Kosuke Fukudome is coming to the MLB. He is getting ready to notify the Tokyo Giants he will decline their offer. The main suitors for him are the Cubs, Padres, White Sox, and maybe the Rangers. Its been rumored the Padres have offered Fukudome a 3 year 36 million dollar contract and the Cubs a 3 year 45 million dollar one. The Cubs and White Sox are willing to pay the highest for his services but he may want to play on the West Coast. Fukudome's agent Joe Urbon had denied Fukudome has made the decision to jump to the MLB. Urbon said "he's not going to decide until Tuesday, or Monday our time," and he had to say "if he had made that decision, you would have seen it out of Japan by now." A three player deal is on the table, so I assume the Cubs would send two players over. It's known that they'd send a starting pitcher, but we don't have names yet. The authors note that the Orioles have been fond of Rich Hill and Sean Gallagher in the past. Keep in mind that a trade of Roberts would require Peter Angelos' approval. Angelos would have to be "totally overwhelmed" with an offer.
